Quality Grades
Our six grades sapphire material, is selected for specific applications and priced according to quality. The transmission of all optical grades is above 80% in the non-vacuum spectrum (from 0.25 to 4.5 mm) and all grades are available in a variety of orientations: (0001), (1010), (1102), (1120) or Random. Because of our consistency in material selection and the outstanding quality of our material, many customers specify one of our quality levels in their design criteria. Our sapphire grade for specific applications is a reliable choice, since customers are not sold a higher priced product if a lower grade can meet their requirement.
Quality Grades
For surface quality of optical components (windows) we always use US Military Specification for optical components ( MIL-0-13830) when describing the surface quality.
Please always specify the required surface quality in accordance with MIL-0-13830 (see details below):
SCRATCH: Any marking or tearing of the glass surface. SLEEK SCRATCH: A hairline scratch. GRUSH or RUB SCRATCH: A surface scratch or a series of small scratches. DIG: A small rough spot on the glass surface similar to pits in appearance. A bubble is considered a dig. PROCEDURE: Instrument: Optical comparator. Surface quality is to be specified by a number such as 60/40, which would permit a scratch width of 60 μm (0.0024 inches) and a dig diameter of 40 ?m (0.0158 inches).
